It seems gross but
K so I don't remember it but I'm sure I hated it when my mom tried to suck the snot out of my nose with one of those rubber bulb things. Times haven't changed much, that's what they gave us at the NICU when we left. That being said, 4 mommy matinees later I found myself purchasing a ridiculous looking swedish contraption per a conversation with one of my Nike friends. Una got sick this week and I found myself at 2AM with this thing shoved up her nose and the other end strategically placed in my mouth, yeah...in my mouth. She still hated it but man does this thing suck! It is the best thing ever. We have used it a bunch this week and it has helped her to breath so much! Thank you my Swedish friends.
A blanket on the couch
crinkly
Apparently all along I could have just gotten her a krinkle toy and the crying would have stopped. She loves this thing!

Morningtime
Passing the baby around
One of the most surprising joys I have found in being a new mother is the process of introducing Una to new people. There is a silent pride in handing over a little human body that Tom and I made from scratch. This weekend a handful of Punky holders stuck out from the rest for very different reasons:
Generational:
Grandpa -
Need I say more? There's 4 generations in this photo, sounds cliche but the guy crashed in a bomber jet in Oiwa Jima for shits sake! Watching G pa wave at the baby and having him tell me that meeting her made his birthday bash the best one was crazy cool.
Mortality:
Auntie Mary Ellen -
This was a bittersweet meeting. Watching our beloved cancer sick auntie holding our new baby was amazing. I was so glad to have made it to Cali in time for her to meet the little one. So strange how new life leads us to think about the cycle that always comes to an end at some point. In a strange way Una seemed bigger than Auntie Mary Ellen, she seemed strangely healthy and virile next to her frail body, the love that was exchanged was a real awesome sight!
Drunken:
Josh -
What can I say? Drunken Josh scaring the baby made life worth living. The real gem was when Josh told Tom, who was holding the baby, that he wished he could trade her places. Now we aren't quite sure what he meant, but we chose not to question him.

Granpa's 87th birthday
Grandpa's B day was a total success. Tom and I felt guilty for not helping more due to the fact that we took a day trip to the weed capital of America, but it seemed to come together without us just fine. $200 at Costco and a drunk cousin that wouldn't stop telling "TMI" stories later the partying began. It was complete with unruly children, groups of family meeting again or for the first time, and grandpa decked out in pirate gear and hearing aids. It wound down pretty early but I guess that's what happens as people get older and have babies etc. When I would have normally been wasted sitting by the fire with the cousins, I was sitting in the kitchen watching numerous family members make funny faces at my baby...ahh, life is good right now. Albeit different, but cozy in a new baby kind of way.

Menodcino
Ahhh yes, Medoncino, home of weed, weed, and the Steinbrechers. We set off from grandpas house on Saturday morning and drove to Mendo to see the new addition to the Steinbrecher fam and rest our souls at the beach. On the way we encountered a burger joint that turned out to be a time warp/twilight zone (in a good way). Tom went in to get cheeseburgers whilst I kicked it with the punky to watch the wind whip through the tree branches and poop etc. During the time it took Tom to get the grub we encountered, a classic car club (so cool), a motorcycle gang (yuppies), and a handful of people in period clothing (civil war). Apparently the way to Mendocino is paved with awesomeness! The weather was perfect, the Steinbrecher compound was hobbit like, and the waves were huge! So glad we chose to go.

12/12/10 Una's first airplane ride!
It was hot, stuffy , and apparently the plague is going around cause there were people coughing at every turn but Punky hung in there and earned her stripes this last weekend. People had suggested to me that we breastfeed on takeoff and landing but there was no way to time her hunger with the landing gear. We winged it and it worked out, my ears were popping like crazy all the while the babe sweet talked our neighboor and flirted with her papa. Hell yes! that's my kid!
