Tom put Una down for a nap the other day against the back of the couch. It must have been super cozy because she slept for like 2 hours! She has definitely made a transition on the night sleeping, much to our excitement. She has been going for three and four hour long stretches! So awesome!!
Things are definitely happening, last night Una had her first laugh. I was just watching TV and looked over at her and she thought it was hilarious. Man if that's not a sound that will melt your heart I don't know what is. Also I woke up last night and she was all sideways in her bed...she is officially wiggly!
Wow is it a sunny beautiful day here in Portland Oregon! Una and I ran around, met Katy for lunch at Takahashi, went to Fred Meyer, returned some stuff. See below the latest purchase, I couldn't freakin' resist, they were so cute! The bug has really started to smile more, it is fast and unexpected so I haven't been able to catch it on film yet but as soon as I do I will post :)
Una officially hates her carseat, we did a few errands today and it was like I had a siren in the truck with all the cryin'!! Hopefully that gets better.
On Thursday I went to the mommy matinee with my friend Brianna, she shared a story about her best friend that scared me straight. Her best friend had a 4 month old baby and took him to his very first day of daycare. The day before she had called her doctor about a cold that he had and asked if she could do anything to relieve his symptoms. The doctor told her to put a pillow in the crib to prop him up. Against her better judgment she told the daycare to do this. She showed up at the end of the day to sign him out and went over to the crib to wake him from his nap, she found him blue and not responding. He died, the coroner said it was due to suffocation. Last night I decided no more sleeping in the bed for Punky. She doesn't like the idea too much but hopefully she gets used to it cause it's not worth anything happening her. I think she'll get used to it in the next couple of days, fingers crossed!
Una is definitely seeing much better this week. She is staring into our eyes for hours on end and so alert and playing in the mornings. Her new favorite thing is her quilt that her auntie shirley made for her that has some really high contrast pieces. She is changing every day it is amazing. We also got her a yoga ball this week so that we can do tummy time and bounce her when she is fussy (which works wonders). Tom says she's riding a bicycle when she kicks her legs as well, shes pretty busy these days. Carolyn is here right now helping me to be able to take a shower and do some other chores out and about which is wonderful! Parenthood is rad :)
Today Dierdre's mom came over to visit and meet Una. She brought an old school baby scale with her and we weighed Una. She is up to around 9 pounds! man from 7.3 to 9 in one month so crazy, she still feels so little to me.
So it turns out that Kennedy school has something called a "mommy matinee" where fussing is encouraged. My friend Steph invited me and some other recruits on Thursday. Felt good to get out with Una and to be around a ton of other moms. Man the place was packed for 1PM on a Thursday. Ended up being 4 other newborns plus Una and I. It was so good to be around other new moms with babies just Una's age! We bounced, rocked, and fed our way through Where the Wild Things Are and then spent another hour after swapping stories of our adventures so far. During the movie there was a symphony of babies crying and no one was upset or even miffed, so cool, gotta write the McMenamins a thank you letter or something.
The grandmas were stoked to bring Christmas to us cause Una is fragile. Man it felt good and relaxing to have family in Portland to hang out with. Stockings were hung and baby kisses were given.
We were a little bit happy and a little bit terrified when they told us that she was free to come home with us. Seemed like just yesterday that after 9 hours of hard labor the midwife along with the OB team broke the news to me that we would need to do an emergency c section. There was no need for a conversation, I felt that if she was in danger, we needed to get her out as soon as possible. After her birth it was discovered that she had a low body temperature and some tremors in her hands and eyes. They transferred her from our arms to the NICU within 11 hours. The next morning we went down to the NICU to get the whole story from her doc. They wanted to do some tests to try and figure out what was wrong, eeg, mri, spinal tap...etc. The doc said that she not only had tremoring and low body temp but a platelet count that could signify an infection, low blood sugar, low tone in her muscles, and jaundice. After the tests were done we were informed that she had bumped her head while in labor and gotten some mild bleeding on the frontal lobe of her brain. All of the things we were seeing could be a result of this. I pumped at home while recovering from my c section every three hours through the night the had tom wheel me in the wheelchair to her floor in the hospital and breastfed morning and afternoon at the NICU. We did this for around 10 days. It was hard but for a good cause so I think we were able to find the energy somewhere. After 11 days she had eliminated all of the symptoms one by one and was strong enough to come home with us. This was one of the most stressful things we have every been through, one of many.
